Wei Torti’s Candidacy
for ANC 3/4G-05

Chevy Chase Neighbors,
I am Weiqing Torti, my friends and family call me “Wei.” I’m pleased to announce my candidacy to represent Single Member District 05 on Advisory Neighborhood Commission 3/4G. Allow me to introduce myself and explain why I’m running.
I live in the heart of Chevy Chase, where our residential and commercial areas meet. I walk our blocks, shop in our stores, and eat in our restaurants. I see how what the District does—or doesn’t do—affects us all. I want to help us secure the responsive local government we deserve.
This is more important than ever. The proposed redevelopment of the Community Center and Library site—the “Civic Core”—as a mixed-use project with housing is a once-in-a-generation undertaking that looms large over our community. The District and its development team have established a framework, but the project remains subject to DC Council review.
I respect the views of proponents and opponents alike. But I bring something different to the debate: professional expertise. I’m an architect with 27 years of experience. I will put that experience to work helping our community critically assess the proposal—including its scale, design, functionality, and public spaces. Together, we will assess whether it serves our community and press for needed changes.
To be sure, the Civic Core is far from our only concern. Safe streets, reliable city services, good schools, a thriving commercial corridor, and the everyday quality of life in our neighborhood also require attentive, effective representation that reflects our neighbors’ interests and priorities.
Empowering residents in local governance is why the Advisory Neighborhood Commissions were created under Home Rule. But that doesn’t happen automatically—or through listening alone. It requires a commissioner who comes to the job without a preset personal or special-interest agenda.
In my professional life, I have always known who the client is. As your commissioner, I will always know who my constituents are—each and every resident of SMD 05.
Families and seniors, renters and homeowners, new arrivals and longtime residents all deserve a voice in our community conversation. I will bring those voices into the discussion, seek consensus on our shared priorities, and actively advocate for our district on the Commission and for our Commission before the DC government.
Listen, engage, act—with an open mind, a trained eye, and community spirit.
That’s my commitment. Over the next two months, I’ll be meeting neighbors at their doors, reaching out to apartment residents, and speaking with business owners. I encourage everyone to share comments and concerns with me at wei.torti.5@gmail.com.
